Do you need a permit for a container?

All-Container guides2 min read

This is one of the questions we hear most often. The answer depends on how you use the container, how long it stays and its foundation. Rules differ from one town hall to another, so checking locally is always the first step.

What matters

  • Use: storage, office, workshop or living space.
  • Duration: temporary placement (for example, for the duration of a construction site) or permanent.
  • Foundation and connections: a container set on blocks, without utilities, is treated differently from one fixed on a foundation and connected to utilities.
  • The land: inside or outside the built-up area, and the local zoning rules.

What we recommend

  1. Ask the planning department of your town hall before placing the container.
  2. Describe exactly the use, dimensions and duration.
  3. Keep the invoice and the container data sheet for your file.

Documents we provide

You receive a tax invoice and, on request, the container data sheet (dimensions, weight, material), useful for any application at the town hall.
